Jill, an Architect from City, State Asks:

Will our registration desk in our hotel meet the ADA requirements if we provide a pull out tray?

A pull out tray is fine If the hotel was built between January 26, 1993 and March 15, 2012 because the original (1991) ADA Standards for Accessible Design allowed such a design. The current (2010) ADA Standards specify that a section of the counter be at wheelchair height - 36 inches maximum high. If the project is undertaken to remove barriers, decide whether lowering a section of the counter would be “readily achievable” – able to be carried out without much difficulty or expense. If lowering a section of the counter is not readily achievable, then install the pull out tray.
