Question from Jill

Question:

Does adding a crosswalk constitute an alteration and require curb ramps with detectable warnings?

Answer:

Yes, newly constructed or altered streets, roads, and highways must contain curb ramps or other sloped areas at any intersection having curbs or other barriers to entry from a street level pedestrian walkway. Whether detectable warnings (raised truncated domes) are required is more complicated. If U.S. Department of Transportation funding is involved detectable warnings are required.
