Sidewalk

Question:

A neighborhood sidewalk is obstructed by a big tree, making it impossible for people with disabilities to use the sidewalk. The road and sidewalk were recently redone. What does the law require?

Answer:

When altering an element (such as a sidewalk), the element must comply with the ADA Standards. For a sidewalk the running slope can follow the road but the cross slope needs to be 2% max. Also the surface should be stable, firm and slip resistant with no changes in level greater than ½” beveled and 36" wide min. The town needs to maintain the sidewalk as an accessible route.
